BWCA Preparedness Workshop



This comprehensive, instructor-led class equips beginners and experienced paddlers alike with the essential skills needed for a safe and successful canoe trip Participants will actively practice:

  • Trip planning and packing
  • Proper canoe paddling techniques
  • Cooking meals over a campfire and stove
  • Setting up and breaking down a campsite
  • Key wilderness safety practices—including wearing life jackets, handling emergencies, weather awareness, and Leave No Trace principles
  • Wilderness navigation basics, such as map reading, compass use, and locating portages
  • And much more!

In a real-world environment, you'll build confidence and competence through direct hands-on experience. Whether you're planning your first Boundary Waters trip or refreshing your skills before heading out, this full-day course provides everything you need for secure, enjoyable wilderness travel.
